Torrential Rains Turn UAE’s Desert Mountains into Waterfalls

Heavy rainfall across several parts of the United Arab Emirates on December 14 transformed normally arid desert mountains into flowing waterfalls, flooding nearby valleys and creating rare and dramatic scenes.

Intense rain, strong winds and lightning lit up the UAE’s skies, offering an unusual contrast to the country’s typically sunny weather. According to a report by Gulf News, the National Center of Meteorology (NCM) had already forecast unstable weather conditions and warned residents that several areas would be affected.

The “Storm Center” shared videos from the Jais mountain range showing rainwater cascading down rocky slopes, forming temporary waterfalls. These flows led to significant water accumulation in the valleys of Ras Al Khaimah, enhancing the natural beauty of the mountainous landscape.

Rainwater also began to collect on roads leading to Jebel Jais, with vehicles sending up splashes as they passed through pooled water. Early morning cloud cover created near-dark conditions, forcing motorists to switch on headlights.

Similar footage shared by Storm Center showed a pedestrian walking along a road, shielding their head and upper body from the rain.

According to Gulf News, thunderstorms accompanied by rainfall, hail and a drop in temperatures continue to affect parts of the UAE. The NCM has forecast that weather conditions may intensify between December 16 and 19, with further rain and colder winds expected.

The National Center of Meteorology, Abu Dhabi Police and Dubai Police have urged residents to exercise caution during severe weather and to follow official advisories to avoid potential accidents.
